iPhone 1.1.4 update

29 02 2008

Hmm, I’ve seemed to have lost the backlight timer setting on the forced upgrade when I had to restore my iPhone after I had these unwelcomed Bookmarks bar and menus in my bookmarks. The only way to remove them is to restore the phone to factory and start as new user (not restore previous). Of course, by doing this, I lost all my bookmarks, calendar, contacts and notes. Lucky music and photos where simple enough to reload.

if it’s Thursday…

28 02 2008

If it’s Thursday I must be getting a car serviced. Well, atl least 4 out of the last 8 plus back-to-back Friday’s of leaving work early to pick-up the car. The first 6 were mainly time and little money but today’s was a doozy ($1600+). As usual, went in thinking $400-500 but we all know it seldom stays near there. Can’t say it we didn’t see it coming. We thought maybe it would possibly ballon to the $700 range but a new battery and leaky waterpump did us in.

Returning home from dropping off the car I decided to see how the iPhone has made it’s way into my life. After a 30min walk to the San Mateo caltrain station, I was able to check when the next train to the station near my home was with iCaltrain.  Hmm, the ticket machine doesn’t accept bills. The train came right on time (10:02) and 9 mins later I was at the Belmont station. Unfortunately I had purchased a zones 1 – 2 ticket and I really need a zone 2 -2 ticket.

the loaner. now, that’s another story err post…

So, they need the car overnight now. I get a ride to the local Hertz location. Shuttle guy drives fast. I get to the counter, license and credit card, please. DAMN! Forgot my wallet at home. Can you give me a ride home? “You live in Sunnyvale?” No, Redwood City. “That’s too far. We don’t go there.” Well, then I can’t take the car then, can I? How ’bout a ride to the train station? The manager takes pity on me and has another employee drive me home. This one’s even faster, tailgates and weaves in and out but we arrive back one piece. We do the paperwork song and dance. “Would you like the damage waiver for $14.50?” Usually I say no but this time I relented. Too tired from VW? I get my car, a Chevrolet Malibu. I drive home and just before exiting the freeway to buy lunch… Whack! I get a chip (three actually with one hit!) from the truck in front and to the left. A new record! A windshield chip in 30mins! The Rabbit was I think was 1 week and the CRV was 3 months. So, it was good I took the damage waiver. Hmm, maybe things are looking up!

the end? (VW service)

22 02 2008

Today I picked-up my car for I hope the last time with this issue (see previous post).

Here’s the timeline-

  1. Nov 1, 2007, first diagnosed by independent service shop. Loose filler neck inside engine.
  2. Nov 15, 2007, had Boardwalk VW look at above while headlamps being replaced because of recall. They say defective oil filler cap. They order part but never call. Upon further inspection by me, that’s NOT the problem.
  3. Jan 10, 2008, I take it to Sunnyvale VW. They diagnose that the filler neck is indeed loose. Schedule install in next week but I push it to 2 weeks.
  4. Jan 24, 2008, I bring in car to have above parts installed. Did you get a call from parts that they (the parts) are in? No… so I leave. They called a week later to say the parts are now in and apologize after I wrote them a letter.
  5. Feb 21, 2008, I’m here AGAIN. I called to confirm the parts are still THERE the day before. 3.5hrs later, they inform me that they needed yet another part which had to be replaced during the disassembly and of course, didn’t have. They assured me they’ll have it tomorrow and gave my a loaner car from Hertz (more on that later).
  6. Feb 22, 2008, 1030AM, Craig calls that the last part is in and they’re working on it now. 130PM,I receive another call that the car is ready for pick-up. I could’ve sworn he said that it was going to the detail dept for a quick wash but it looked the same. In fact, there were white spots on the engine cover and other spots in the engine compartment.

All in all, this is what I lost time-wise:

  1. 6.5hrs of driving back and forth.
  2. 4.5hrs of waiting in the customer lounge.

Well, I do have a $90 and $50 credits at Sunnyvale and Boardwalk respectly.

There, feels go to “vent” doesn’t it?

too sweet?

finally feeling like my old self…

3 02 2008

I’m been sick for gosh, 5 weeks now. It all started before Christmas and I’ve gone through laryngitis, two colds or flus (maybe one each), coughing the whole time, bloody noses and sore right ribs. I’ve seen the doctor four times during. One was the cauterization of my left nostril for the bloody noses. I felt about 20+ burns with the electric cauterization device. Nothing like being grounded. I’ve also finished two bottles of codeine and had some Tessalon perles to try to help curb the coughing (neither was much help) and a dose of the antibiotic Azithromycin. Not to mention more over the counter meds and soups. I have another doctor’s appointment tomorrow but I think I just tell them about my ribs.
